0645 Meet for a 0700 Start
The Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge is a hard but super rewarding day out for any keen walker, no matter their experience. As the name suggests, the challenge is to summit the three highest peaks of Yorkshire (Pen Y Ghent, Whernside & Ingleborough) in one single circuit. The distance totals 24.5 miles and the challenge is to complete it in under 12 hours.
The route starts in the little village of Horton-In-Ribblesdale and traditionally follows the route anti-clockwise, however we tend to go backwards for a quieter time of it. The challenge has a real mixture of terrain, from easy grassy trails through to steeper rocky ascents.
Although a popular route, many groups find employing the services of a guide beneficial as they can also set the pace of the day, manage the group, be on hand to deal with any emergency situations and of course navigate.
The route crosses the road twice throughout the challenge (between the peaks) which creates a great opportunity to meet a vehicle if you have someone supporting you. A vehicle is useful for carrying additional food and fluids as well as changes of clothes and footwear.
We have led people of all abilities around the challenge, and all who have completed have found it to be a very rewarding day out, and have even come back for seconds. This is a great stepping stone towards taking on tougher challenges in our collection such as the Lakeland 10 Peaks Challenge or Lakeland 24 Peaks Challenge.
