The Keswick 3 Peaks Challenge with Professional Mountain Leaders

Surrounding Derwent Water and Keswick are three mid-level peaks, that when linked make a superb 18 mile route. The route takes in Catbells, Walla Crag and Latrigg, all of which offer a new view over Derwent Water and the Borrowdale valley, making this not only a challenge day, but a lovely journey too.

This challenge could be described as an excellent 'entry' level event as it has a multi-peak bagging feel, but the peaks aren't too huge and the trails linking them are excellent. So ultimately, if you're after a mountain challenge walk that isn't too crazy, that would suit a mixed ability group, the Keswick 3 Peaks Challenge is well worth considering.

Terrain: Mostly Good Trails    Duration: Approx. 7-9 Hours

Route Stats: Miles - 18  Ascent - 1000m.      Start Location: Keswick

From Keswick the route starts on easy trails by following the Cumbria Way out towards the infamous peak of Catbells. This double humped mountain, with its steeper trails and small scrambles doesn't give up easily, but then it is the toughest part of the whole challenge. After enjoying views from the summit a descent is made into Borrowdale, but the route doesn't stay in the valley long before ascending back out the other side. Quiet trails are used to reach peak 2, Walla Crag. With two down, and one to go, the route heads down and into Keswick, after which a loop over the third peak of Latrigg is enjoyed. A fast descent back into Keswick brings up the end  of the challenge.

The route naturally crosses a road after the first two peaks, and so this offers the opportunity for the group to meet a support vehicle. A support vehicle is useful for carrying additional clothing and food for the group, or for ferrying injured  / fatigued people out of the challenge.

Charity Client Testimonial

“Matt from Lakeland Mountain Guides hosted our very first Keswick Three Peaks Challenge. Fundraising events and fundraising as a whole, is very new to us as an organisation, and I felt fully at ease knowing we were in safe hands with Matt and the team. We were in communication throughout the entire booking process, and Matt told me no question was too silly. All of our queries were answered promptly and I felt well informed throughout the entire process.

The day itself was very well organised and Matt and George were very helpful and accommodating to our team and our needs. The atmosphere was wonderful and it was great to hear more about the guides and some of their previous adventures, many of which were much more extreme than our relatively straightforward challenge! We were truly blessed with the weather too as the sun shone all day long.

From the very first conversation with Matt I knew we’d be in safe hands and would use Lakeland Mountain Guides again without hesitation. It was a fantastic day, one I and our fundraisers will never forget. We can’t wait for our next event with Lakeland Mountain Guides!

Thank you.”
