Terrain: Mostly Grassy. Small Sections of Exposure Duration: Approx. 12 Hours
Route Stats: Miles - 24.5 Ascent - 1600m. Start Location: Horton-in-Ribblesdale
The 24.5 mile circuit is generally started in the village of Horton-in-Ribblesdale. The traditional circuit takes on the route in an anti-clockwise fashion which makes Pen Y Ghent the first peak. The challenge doesn't start lightly, with it being pretty much uphill from the word go all the way to the top of the first summit. If going well you'll be on top within 70 - 90 minutes of starting the challenge.
The next section of the challenge is about eating in to that mileage. The descent off Pen Y Ghent is made on good tracks and then you travel across undulating fields for several miles before meeting the road at Ribblehead Viaduct. This is a natural stopping point and is an excellent place to have a support vehicle carrying additional food and clothing. A support vehicle can be provided by Lakeland Mountain Guides if required.
The journey towards peak two starts with a lovely section alongside the Ribblehead Viaduct and railway. The path soon sweeps round and starts to rise towards Whernside, the highest of the Yorskshire 3 Peaks. The often windy summit ridge does put up a bit of a fight but once you are on the summit you are over half way and have just 1 peak to go.
After a steep descent from Whernside the route again crosses the road at Chapel Le Dale and offers another opportunity to meet a support vehicle. The legs by now will no doubt be tired, but just one mountain stands between you and the finish line. The start of the ascent up Ingleborough crosses grassy fields but this soon changes as the slopes steepen. A final steep stepped section leads on to the large summit plateau - an often confusing area of the route for those unprepared. Finally, the third and final peak is reached and the 5 mile descent to Horton with weary legs is all that remains.
