MOUNTAIN SKILLS COURSES

Two Day I Four Day I Scrambling Skills I Wild Camping

As we state on our Navigation Training Courses page, knowing how to use  map and compass confidently is an essential skill when heading into the mountains of the UK, however this is only part of the puzzle that makes a well-rounded hillwalker. Our mountain skills courses aim to give you confidence in all areas, from as scrambling and route finding through to interpreting the weather and emergency procedures.

On this page you will also find our specialist skills courses. These are our Wild Camping Experience and a Security on Steep Ground and Scrambling Skills Day.

WILD CAMPING EXPERIENCE & SKILLS

Whether you are a Mountain Leader Aspirant or just a hill walker then this skills course can be of great benefit to you. If you enjoy a bit of scrambling on broken terrain with friends and family then having the skills to be able to protect them and yourself is an added bonus.

If you are a Mountain Leader then you will probably know this is one of the most failed modules alongside Navigation, so having a refresher course before you go to assessment could be a great benefit. Over the course of the day we'd hope to cover:

  • 'Spotting' - Providing support whilst scrambling

  • Confidence Roping,  Belay Methods & Knots

  • Anchor Selection

  • Route Finding

  • The Leaders Descent - Abseiling with just a rope

Experiencing the sunset and sunrise whilst on the fells is remarkable. That feeling of being up there when everyone else is in bed or sitting inside watching TV makes you feel like a true adventurer! Camping up on the fells is not only a fantastic way to experience this but a great way to spend a weekend! On this 2 day Wild Camping Experience we will set out on a long journey somewhere in the Lake District and spend a night out on the side of one of our great mountains. On our two day experience we'd expect to cover:

  • Basic Navigation Training

  • Route Planning, Map and Compass Work

  • Equipment Selection - Tent Types, Camping Equipment

  • Food Selection

  • Hygiene & Sanitation - Finding clean water etc

  • Basic weather interpretation

  • Environmental Concerns and UK Laws

Wild Camping equipment can be hired for the course if you do not have your own. Your evening meal will be provided for you.

Please note that to participate in this course you need to have basic hill fitness and be able to carry a 12-14kg rucksack over mountainous terrain for a total of about 15 miles.
