Winter Skills in the Lake District

One Day Winter Skills - We're back, baby! ❄️

Today I had the absolute pleasure of introducing Sian, Simon, Paul, Chris and Sally to winter up on Helvellyn. We met in Glenridding with an open mind, knowing we'd cover some mountain skills of some sort.

We quickly got up into Red Tarn Cove, talking about planning and preparation for winter journeys as we went (forecasts, kit, calories, avalanche avoidance). Once at the back of the Cove we kitted up in our winter kit.

The snow was pretty wet, but there was certainly enough to practice walking in crampons, and we took a fab line up the side of Swirral Edge onto the crest. As we topped out we got blasted with graupel (hail) and made the decision to quickly tag the summit before rapidly retreating back down Swirral Edge.

The brief time we spent on the summit plateau certainly highlighted the importance of good winter kit to the group!

Thanks for a brilliant day all.

Our next scheduled course is Saturday 21st January, with 3 spaces remaining. #LivefortheNow
